Practical, hands-on help for people in Wembley and across Brent, from a week's food and a warm bed to a lift to a hospital appointment

Brent Champions CIO Hub is a community charity working in Wembley and the surrounding areas of Brent. What it offers is deliberately practical: the things people actually need to get through a hard week, brought round by people who live nearby.

That means food bags with enough staples to cover a week for one person, along with toiletries, clean clothing, bedding and household goods, whether new or refurbished. It means SIM cards preloaded with six months of credit and 40GB of data when they are in stock, and laptops and phones supplied through Computers 4 Good. Winter warmer bags go out when the weather turns, and where someone needs a specific piece of equipment, including medical equipment, the charity tries to source it.

A lot of what Brent Champions does is not goods at all. Trustees visit people in hospital and take care of the errands that pile up while they are in there. They drive people to and from medical appointments, to the shops and out for the day, as a friend rather than as a service. They sit with people who are isolated, look after pets when someone is too ill to manage, and pass on pet supplies when they have them. They point people towards established support services and then follow up to check it actually happened, which is the step that usually gets missed. Alongside that there is a community garden to help run, and international evenings that bring people in Brent together across the cultures living side by side there.

The charity was registered in 2016 but only began operating formally this year, when it finally opened a bank account. Through the years in between the trustees carried on doing the work unofficially, often paying for things out of their own pockets. None of it was written down at the time, so Brent Champions arrives with the better part of a decade behind it and very little on paper to show for it.

Right now the trustees use their own cars to get people to appointments and to move donated goods around. A vehicle of its own is what the charity is working towards.

Brent Champions needs volunteers more than almost anything else, and there is a lot to get stuck into.

The most immediate job is sorting. The charity has a storage area holding a large amount of donated goods that needs going through and organising before any of it can reach the people waiting for it. There is also a garden clearance that has got well beyond what one person can manage, which is a proper day's work for a group.

Beyond that, the charity is looking for someone to work alongside an existing volunteer repairing electrical items, which are then sold on to raise funds, and for people who can help with fundraising and with getting the charity's story out.

Travel to and from the storage area and subsistence are covered, and Brent Champions is happy to give references. If you are building up experience in community work this is an unusually open brief, because the charity is right at the beginning and there is room to shape what you do.

To donate, please complete the form below.

Donate £2

£2 covers toiletries for someone who has run out and cannot replace them this week. These are the first things people go without when money is tight, and the easiest to put right.

Donate £5

£5 goes towards a winter warmer bag, put together for people trying to get through a cold stretch without turning the heating on.

Donate £10

£10 goes towards a food bag of staples, packed to cover a week for one person and taken round to their door.

Donate £20

£20 helps cover fuel for a run of hospital and shopping trips. Trustees drive people in their own cars, so this goes straight into keeping people moving.

Donate £50

£50 goes towards the vehicle Brent Champions is saving for. A van of its own instead of borrowed cars would mean more people reached, and more of the donated goods sitting in storage getting into homes.
