CML Support UK Joins Help2Fund

Run by patients, for patients, with nobody drawing a salary. CML Support UK is the newest charity to join Help2Fund.

Who they are

CML Support UK is a small charity for people living with chronic myeloid leukaemia. CML is a rare blood cancer, and rare is the operative word: most people diagnosed with it will never meet another patient in ordinary life, and the odds are their GP has seen very few cases.

The charity exists to close that gap. They publish high quality information on their website, including video explainers made with specialist clinicians, and they run what is now the largest CML patient discussion forum in the world.

Why a forum matters more than it sounds

The value of a patient forum for a rare condition is not emotional support, or not only that. It is information density. Questions like what a particular side effect actually feels like at month four, whether a specific dose reduction worked for anybody, or what treatment-free remission is like in practice, are questions the literature answers slowly and other patients answer immediately.

With a common cancer that knowledge circulates naturally. With CML there is no natural circulation, so somebody has to build the room and keep it running.

The part most people never see

Behind the forum, CML Support UK works with clinicians around the world to represent patient views where decisions are actually made. That means clinical trial design, and it means health technology assessments, the process that determines which treatments get funded and on what terms.

This is technical, unglamorous, largely invisible work. It is also the work that determines what treatment looks like for every CML patient in the country, including the ones who have never heard of the charity. Patient organisations that turn up to those processes properly prepared change outcomes; ones that do not, do not.

Nobody takes a salary

The charity has no paid staff. Volunteers claim expenses only, which means 100% of any donation goes towards the charity's objective of supporting patients rather than towards running the organisation that supports patients.

It is a claim a lot of charities would like to make and very few can. It also means the cost base is unusually visible: website hosting, and travel.

Where your money goes

A £2 donation covers their website running costs for a day.

A £5 donation covers roughly two and a half days.

A £10 donation keeps the site running for nearly a week.

A £20 donation covers a volunteer's travel to a local clinical meeting.

A £50 donation covers typical travel expenses for a volunteer to attend a regional clinical meeting, which is how patient representation actually happens in practice.

About Help2Fund

Help2Fund is a free platform that gives small registered charities in England and Wales promotional support and fundraising infrastructure they would otherwise have to pay for. It is run by a team of volunteers, and the support is personalised to each charity rather than sold as a fixed package: some partners want social media content, some want a donation page, some want help telling a story they have never had the time to write down.
